ABOUT

Laura Matukonytė is a Lithuanian interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture and installation. Combining her background in fashion design with contemporary sculptural practice, she explores paper as a material for constructing spatial systems that emerge through dialogue with gravity, light, moisture and time.

Her practice is rooted in making as a way of thinking. Rather than treating material as passive matter, she approaches the studio as a site of observation where form emerges through an ongoing dialogue between material, gravity, moisture, light and time. Working primarily with paper, she investigates how seemingly fragile materials can develop structural presence and occupy architectural space without concealing their inherent vulnerability.

Construction is central to her practice. Drawing on methods of pattern cutting, folding, joining and assembling, she develops sculptural systems in which surfaces become volumes and individual elements form interconnected spatial structures. Rather than imposing predetermined forms, she works through processes that allow materials to participate in shaping the outcome. Through minimal gestures and material precision, her installations invite a slower way of looking, revealing sculpture as a temporary balance of forces rather than a static form.

In 2025, she created ∞D (Multiple Dimensions), a 9-metre suspended paper sculpture for the staircase of the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius. Her works has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Lithuania and internationally, including Interplay at Haus des Papiers, Berlin.
